Contemporary Kitchen | 2020

This black contemporary kitchen certainly has the wow factor!

About this kitchen

Monochrome Magic

Colour is not everyone’s cup of tea, and this kitchen shows just how little colour is needed to create a perfectly impactful space. Matte black teamed with white creates a high-contrast, ultra-modern space proving that black is the new black! This contemporary kitchen is pure monochrome magic.

The kitchen was laid out in a one-wall configuration with a central island to make the most of the double-volume open-plan space with the adjoining terraced dining room and living room. The island features a waterfall countertop in a beautifully marbled engineered stone, with seating space and wine storage on one side and a bank of drawers and built-in appliances on the other. The island serves as a large food preparation zone, with an under-slung sink and matt black sink mixer with a pull-out spout. The island also houses the dishwasher and waste bin system and doubles up as a serving space for the dining room.

The cabinet layout along the wall includes a tall pantry cabinet with pull-out shelves, banks of drawers and wall-mounted cabinets with LED underlighting. The blackened glass splashback reflects the open-plan space and glimpses of the cityscape beyond. The cabinets’ finishings consist of a durable PVC wrap in a slick contemporary matt black. The black quartz countertop features a dark bronze speck that ties in with the antiqued bronze drawer pulls. The cabinets feature drawers within drawers, and shelves spaced at shorter intervals for smaller items such as mugs and cups to maximize storage space.

Add a pop of colour to your monochromatic space with accessories.  In the kitchen, this is easily achieved by selecting small appliances in vibrant colours.  Adding colour to a room creates points of interest directing the eye to view the room from various perspectives… when done well it has a huge impact!

The features

We love…

Modern storage solutions come in many shapes and sizes, such as drawers within drawers, making it easy for you to keep your kitchen free from clutter.

Have an open mind when consulting with your kitchen designer.  An experienced designer will offer up great suggestions.  However, it is your space and you know how you will live and work in it, so don’t be afraid to speak up about what will make your life easier.

Design elements in the kitchen need not be purely functional.  A reflective splashback creates interest by mirroring the open-plan living space and in this instance the view of the cityscape below.

Lighting is super important! Ambient, mood and task lighting should all be considered.  Strip lighting beneath wall cabinets allows for working on countertops without casting shadows.

Drawers within drawers are a great way to maximise storage and keep the design lines clean and sleek.
